A photo-audio triptych representing excerpts from a photobook documenting a month-long trip to Asia, including Vietnam – the first time I visited the country my parents left.
Each part of the installation includes a photo, a written piece and two interactive audio devices. Pressing into the recessed surface of the audio device will activate an audio clip. Each of the two devices play the title of the photo: one in Cantonese spoken by my dad and the other, Vietnamese, spoken by my mom.
Photo-Audio Installation:
Three 18 x 22” framed photos, three 6 x 8” printed texts and six 2 x 2 x 3.25” audio devices. Audio devices: tin cans and mixed components.

Object is about the materialization of memory.
Everyday objects bear witness to the intimacies of life. These 50 ceramic pieces carry remnants of lost conversations. Sounds play upon being held – pick one up to hear a minute-long sound byte.

About Object
There is narrative in the accumulation of things and sentiment in their possession.
Our things accompany us day to day. They’re familiar to our intimate spaces. They characterize us as much as we characterize them. How ever we consume, sell, collect, interact with and dispose of them, they have a social currency.
Sometimes, the value is in its commodity; where, how it was made. Often, the meaning is imbued with time, use and the association with its tender owner.
My grandpa used to tinker with things all the time. For a period in his life, he made film projectors for theaters. Whenever you’d visit, you’d find his room – shelves filled with old electronics, circuit boards, pieces and parts of things. He spent all his time building things, connecting wires, until one day, he had a stroke. I remember visiting him after his partial recovery and seeing for the first time, the walls bare. The stark white walls were heartbreaking. Though alive, he’d never be able to create or tinker with his things again. It was the first time I realized the extent of which someone’s belongings reflect their well-being, their craft, their livelihood.
There is a bystander in things. They can be a silent memorial to our experiences. Ultimately surviving us and our loved ones, Object carries the physical vibrations of our intonations – our lost conversations.
These 50 ceramic pieces are artifacts of a modern era. Embodied by the forms / trompe-l’oeil’s of one-time-use consumables, the bottles house discreetly collected information. Recordings made over a 5-year period of conversations, protests, spoken-words, subway rides... the data is distributed and consumed in fragments. Contrasting an ancient ceramic body that survives with age, the circuit within futilely preserves remnants of our exchanges.
Each ceramic vessel plays a unique 30 - 120s soundbyte upon being picked up. The module is triggered by a light resistor in the bottom of the ceramic. Every piece is a unique slipcast from 10 custom plaster molds.
ProcessThis installation was created over a period of 1.5 years. I spent a lot of time thinking about things. Over 100 pieces were cast, some were glazed, but the ultimate 50 were only bisque-fired. The clay itself is a porcelain mixture, poured into a mold and allowed to sit for 3 to 7 days before manipulating and firing. There were 13 molds made from plaster, including a few failed attempts. For the circuitry, a trial of Arduinos, ATinys, MP3 shields, Wifi modules, sound modules, accelerometers, tilt sensors were prototyped, before settling on a greeting card module that operates on a coin battery. The module was resoldered to use a light sensor in place of an spst momentary switch.
Counter
Let’s talk about that “student-loan-debt-crisis.”
Counter is a clock, programmed to calculate my student debt accurate to the second. This is a reflection of not just one, but many across the U.S. saddled with student debt. The Arduino library was written to simplify the calculation of multiple student loans and is available for anyone to use. Let’s break the taboo ice and talk about this.

Touchbase
There is an architectural difference between a maze and a labyrinth. One is designed to confound, the other to facilitate a mediative practice.
Labryinths can be found in places of meditative practice. One path in, one path out. Touchbase is a tactile installation created to simulate the contemplative experience. The deeper into this labyrinth, the lower the frequency of sounds that reflect back.

Creature
A mobile iOS app that places a 3D digital companion (whether that is an elephant or a Koi) into our environment – for some, right into our tiny NY bedroom. The creature lives in our spatial world and can react to us. Much like a Tamagotchi, one can feed the companion, watch them sleep, chase a ball or roam around in our surroundings. What is the extent of human affection for our man-made digital manifestations?
With advances in motion capture, the hope is that in time, this app can bring to life the movements and behaviors of many different species of animals. These technologies can expand the ability for education and learning outside the zoo.

Long Time Coming
A performance and sound art projection for an original song “Long Time Coming.” The soundscape informs a dynamically changing visual system and canvas in the backdrop.
Based on the amplitude and frequency of the sounds coming from our ukulele and mic – the audio organically triggers the frame rate and distortion of the video visuals.
The song is co-written and performed with Lauren Soares.

Sourcing Journal
is a digital publication based in NYC that delivers industry sourcing, apparel and retail news. As the sole in-house designer for Sourcing Journal over 5 years and leading the art department for 3 years – I've had the opportunity to envision and develop its identity and see rapid growth as a brand. Through branding and editorial storytelling, part of my role is to convey a wealth of information (often statistical data and abstract concepts) to a broad audience in interesting ways. Productions include event branding, a bi-yearly print magazine, reports, webinar campaigns, microsites, podcasts, videos, infographics, marketing, newsletter campaigns.
This role grew to helping lead a department of five, producing art for events, marketing advertorials and videoshoots for Women's Wear Daily, Footwear News and Beauty Inc in additiont to Sourcing Journal and Rivet under the Fairchild Media Group umbrella.
Rivet
is the denim face of Sourcing Journal. It's target audience directed to the apparel industry's denim heads— Rivet is it's own entity and in turn has it's own brand identity within Sourcing Journal. Throughout this wall, you'll find designs from both of these brands as well as my own personal projects.

This is C Tang. I'm interested in exploring the ways physical objects and digital interfaces give meaning to our human experience.
Lately, I've been thinking a lot about art as a means of preservation and survival. As someone who's family has relied on creativity as a means to survive, I think about what that means from generation to generation. I'm compelled toward projects informed by emotion and philosophy. I see interactive art, installation, design, creative code, sound, video and photography as tools to interact with people, document, make observations and tell stories. This an ongoing practice of art as a form of activism and cultural preservation.

Nomenclature
Nomenclature is a personal, interactive Cantonese and Vietnamese dictionary that archives the stories that come with the words and sayings I learn from my Mom and Dad.
It's a tool, created to gain fluency in a native langauge, to preserve my parents' voice and carry on their stories. I hope to one day make a version of this open source so that others may preserve their language too.

List
The Diversity List is a digital resource to document and consolidate the diversity breakdown of 100 companies in fashion.
In building this project, our hope is that by making publically available information more accesible, we can give visibility to the issue of diversity in today's most relevant companies in fashion. We want to start with remembering this moment and moving forward by encouraging change.
Imagine spaces beyond fashion, in education, art, tech. The hope is this can be a tool to advocate for change.
